16th July - Todea barbata - King-fern

Todea barbata

Description:
Classified as endangered in South Australia the king-fern is worthy of its name. Fronds are up to 2 m long. It survives in scattered localities in the Mt Lofty Ranges near springs.

Flowering:
Fertile pinnules towards the base of the lamina on the lower half of the pinnae.

Threats:
Suitable sites are also suitable for other uses such as wells for water.

Management:
Fortunately the Mount Lofty provenance is available at some garden centres (such as Flora SA). Hopefully more gardeners will recognise their beauty.
