10th February - Dichelachne crinita - Long-hair Plume-grass

Dichelachne crinita

Perennial, tufted grass up to 1.5 metres high. Easily distinguished because of its long awn over 20mm long and usually over 25mm.

Flowers November - February.

Gradually disappears as more vigorous introdced species of grasses take over. Unfortunatel fire control mowing is normally carried out after introduced grasses have seeded but as native grasses are normally in flower. This means that native grasslands gradually give way to introduced grasslands

Thrives under reasonable management
